Unable to access Direct X 10/11 in Windows 7

When clicking to launch Civilization V I am unable to access Direct X 10/11 mode and I am running Windows 7

This appears to happen when you install Steam to a non-program files directory.  For example this would be the case if you did not install the software to its default location of C:\Program Files\Steam.

If this is the case and you have the problem described above then you can resolve the issue by following the steps below:

  1. Browse to your Steam directory through Explorer (My Computer)
  2. Right click on the Steam.exe and select Properties
  3. Check the option for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and select 'Windows Vista SP2'

Now when launching the game you should be given the option to run in Dx10/11 assuming you meet the hardware requirements for this mode.
