Error Message: "Referenced memory at. Memory could not be 'written'."

We are aware of an issue causing the game to crash with error "The instruction at 'referenced memory at'. The memory could not be 'written'."

BioShock requires virtual memory to run properly. If your virtual memory settings are not correct, you may experience stability problems.

To configure virtual memory:

On Windows XP:

  1. From the start menu, open Settings/Control Panel. 
  2. Double click the System icon. 
  3. Select the Advanced tab. 
  4. Click on the Performance/Settings button. 
  5. Select the Advanced tab. 
  6. Click on the Virtual memory/Change button. 
  7. Select the drive that BioShock is installed on. 
  8. Select the "System managed size" radio button in the "Paging file size for selected drive". 
  9. Click the Set button. 
  10. Click OK multiple times to return to the desktop.

On Windows Vista:

  1. From the start menu, open Settings/Control Panel. 
  2. Select System and Maintenance. 
  3. Select System. 
  4. Select Advanced System Settings. 
  5. Click on the Performance/Settings button. 
  6. Select the Advanced tab 
  7. Click on the Virtual memory/Change button. 
  8. Check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" 
  9. Click OK multiple times to return to the desktop.
