Launcher Blocking DirectX Options

Hello, everyone. 

We're aware that some Civilization V players are encountering an issue with the Civilization launcher at high resolutions, where the launcher blocks out launch options. In the screenshot included with this article, you can see how the user only has the option to use DirectX 9 from the launcher.

We're currently investigating, but it looks like this is due to Windows display setting being adjusted to increase font sizes. We currently have a workaround for the issue and will update this article when we have any more info to share.

Windows 10 

  1. If you are currently in the launcher or playing the game, close them.
  2. Right click on the desktop.
  3. Choose "Display settings".
  4. Look for "Scale and layout".  Make note of what is selected so that you can change back to it later.
  5. Look for "Resolution".  Make note of what is selected so that you can change back to it later.
  6. Change the selected option for "Resolution" to a value lower than 1920x1440. 
    1. If Windows prompts you to "Keep these display settings?", click on the "Keep Changes" button.
  7. Close the "Display settings" window.
  8. Launch the game.
  9. Select the drop down to choose DX version.  You should now see the options properly.
  10. Select your preferred option (e.g. "DirectX 10/11").
  11. Close the launcher.  Your preferred option is now saved.

You may now change your display settings back to their original setting using steps 1-7 again.

 

Windows 7

  6. Close the "Display settings" window.
  7. Launch the game.
  8. Select the drop down to choose DX version.  You should now see the options properly.
  9. Select your preferred option (e.g. "DirectX 10/11").
  10. Close the launcher.  Your preferred option is now saved.

You may now change your display settings back to their original setting using steps 1-7 again.
