Where can I find my Sid Meier's Railroads save games?

Saved games are stored in a special folder within the current user's My Documents folder. This folder can be located by navigating to "My Documents," then selecting "My Games," and finally selecting "Sid Meier's Railroads!".

Railroads! saved games have the extension ".SMRailroadsSavedGame". You may copy or delete these files as you would any other files.

Double-clicking a saved game will launch the game and load that saved game.

When trying to uninstall or reinstall the game, I receive an error message, or it tells me the game is already installed.

  1. Insert the game's install CD in the drive

  2. Double click on my computer

  3. Right click on the CD drive containing the game and choose explore

  4. Check the disc for a setup.exe file and double click on it

  5. This should start the install wizard and prompt you to uninstall the game.

If you continue to experience issues

  1. Open My Computer then open the Local Disk (C:)

  2. Open the program files folder.

  3. Click on the tools menu then choose folder options

  4. Click on the view tab and tick the box labelled "show hidden files and folders". Press OK

  5. Open the installshield installation information folder

  6. Search for a folder named {EE3FBD3C-782E-4A90-9507-0ECFE1FECCE4}

  7. Right click on the folder and choose rename. Press the End key on the keyboard and type the word OLD. ress the enter key

  8. At this point, refer to the manual for installation instructions

This will replace and overwrite any missing components that were preventing the game from being uninstalled or reinstalled normally

I am encountering performance issues while playing Sid Meier's Railroads!

If you are experiencing slowdown, try turning the detail levels for all graphical options down to the minimum, and then adjusting them one by one until you achieve an acceptable balance between visual quality and game performance. Note that turning down shader quality and tree density (in that order) has the greatest impact on the game's performance, so these options are a good place to start when tuning the visuals.

Graphics options can be accessed by selecting Options from the main menu and then Graphics.  The lowest settings are as follows:

  • Full screen - Checked

  • Disable Clouds - Checked

  • Screen Resolution - 1024 x 768

  • Anti-Aliasing - None

  • Texture quality - Low

  • Tree density - Off

  • Shadow quality - Off

  • Shader quality - Low

NOTE: The "High" shader setting is for top-of-the-line cards only, such as the ATI X1800 or the GeForce 7900.

How do I hide obstacles (Cities/Clutter/Trees)?

By holding the [SPACE BAR], all city buildings, clutter and trees can be temporarily hidden from view in order to facilitate track laying or simply get a better look at the terrain.

Information on deleting tracks in Sid Meier's Railroads!

The key to deleting track is to make sure that no train is currently on the track and that no train uses the track for any of its routes. If any train uses a piece of track for its route, whether it is currently on that track or not, that piece of track cannot be deleted. When deleting track, you recieve the full cost of the track back, but not the cost of changing the landscape. When you sell the track in front of a depot, it also sells the depot.

Does Sid Meier's Railroads! include Voice Over IP and how do I activate it?

Sid Meier's Railroads! includes voice-over-IP technology. All that's needed is a functioning microphone.

While playing a multiplayer game, simply press the "/" key while speaking. Playback and capture volume can be adjusted on the "Options" screen. Note that no additional open ports or network configuration are needed to use VoIP in Railroads!
