Risk of Rain 2: The Future of Risk of Rain 2 on Gen 8 Consoles

We made the difficult decision that we will no longer release future Risk of Rain 2 content on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch (aka “Gen 8 consoles”). Going forward, we will focus on releasing Risk of Rain 2 content and updates on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PS5.

One impact this has for future releases is that the game will no longer be cross-platform multiplayer co-op between Gen 8 and Gen 9: PS4 players will not be able to play with PS5 players, and Xbox One players will not be able to play with Xbox Series S/X Players. For now, that cross-gen play remains possible. This change will only go into effect with the next update for PlayStation and Xbox. If Xbox One and PS4 players upgrade in the future to Gen 9 systems, you’ll still receive the respective Gen 9 version of the game (including any DLCs you purchased) at no additional cost.

We didn’t make this decision lightly. We know there are still a number of you on older systems. While you will still be able to play the game you have, we get it doesn’t feel great to have new content come out and be unable to jump into it. This decision, while painful, empowers our devs to continue making content without compromises - so it’s the path we decided to take.

As always, we’d love to hear feedback on the future console plans, and anything else you’d like to let us know. The best place to do that is on the Risk of Rain Discord.

Thanks, everyone, bye for now!
