When you're ready to set up your SHiFT account, we're ready to help you create it!

Whether you start at http://borderlands.com and select SHiFT from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner, or if you go directly to https://shift.gearboxsoftware.com/ you'll find yourself in the same place. From there, you'll move forward by selecting the Create New Account button on the right panel.

From here there are two pathways to creating a new account:

    1. Using Email
    2. Using First Party Account

We've also made available a set of guidelines regarding Display Name Requirements that should provide some good information when you get to that step.

Creating an Account with Email

Step 1: If you want to make ONLY a SHiFT account itself during the creation step, you can select Create New Account with Email

Step 2: This will bring you to the SHiFT Account Sign Up form.

You will need to provide the following information:

  1. Email - This must be a valid email.
    • Make sure you're entering your correct email - email validation is a required step before allowing an account to be accessed or used. If a fake or incorrect email is used, you won't be able to access your profile.
  2. First Name / Last Name
  3. Password - The password must:
    • Be at least 8 characters long
    • Contain at least 1 Uppercase and Lowercase letter
    • Contain at least 1 number or special character
      • Supported special characters include: @?*+.|{}()[]/"',~&%$^-=<>!`\
  4. Confirm Password - Must be an exact match of the Password field.
  5. Verify Date of Birth - You must be at least 18 years old to make an account.
  6. Country of Residence
  7. Agree to the Terms of Service – An account can't be created if you don't agree to the Terms of Service.
  8. Subscription to Newsletter – This is entirely optional and can be altered in user profile after the fact.
  9. Captcha – You know, that standard final step since we need to make sure you're not CL4P-TP or another robot.

Step 3: Once everything's been filled out correctly, the account will be created and the Email Verification will be sent. After you've completed that, then you can finish signing in and access your profile. You're ready to use your SHiFT account, including logging in to check on or change your Display Name!

Creating an Account with a First Party Account

  1. If you already have a supported First Party account and want to create a SHiFT account that's automatically connected to that account, you can choose to sign up by signing directly into your First Party account instead.
    • Supported 1st Party accounts include:
      •  Steam
      • Xbox Live
      • PlayStation Network
      • Epic Games
      • Twitch
      • 2K Account
      • Google
      • Facebook
      • Twitter/X
      • Apple Account
  1. Selecting any of these options, it'll take you to the Sign-In page for the appropriate First Party site.
  2. By signing in to your 1st Party account in this way, you'll be authorizing Gearbox to create a platform association between their new SHiFT account and the First Party platform you logged in to.
    • Example: If you use the PlayStation Network option, you will be asked to sign in to your PlayStation Network account. Once done, you will have a new SHiFT account that is automatically connected to that PlayStation Network account. That makes it pretty easy!
  3. When you're creating an account by signing in to a First Party partner account, all the necessary information (First Name, Last Name, email, and password) is acquired from the account information provided by the First Party, and applied to the SHiFT Account.

This information can be changed after the fact separately by visiting the Profile page on the SHiFT website

Display Name Requirements

Just like we promised, we have some info about your Display Name! As part of the steps to regulate who's able to create SHiFT accounts, to comply with local and international regulations, and ensure that everyone with a SHiFT account sticks to to the right name structure, there is a list of pretty specific rules in place that all SHiFT Account Display Names are required to follow:

  1. Name must be unique. No one else in the database can have the same name. Get creative!
  2. Must be between 3-16 characters long.
  3. Must start with a letter. We don’t allow display names that begin with punctuation or numbers.
  4. Limited to a-z, A-Z, 0-9, or non-consecutive underscore, hyphen, or period/full-stop characters.

Display Names are not chosen at account creation, they are auto-generated based on the provided email.  Once an account is created successfully, you can change your Display Name from the Edit Profile option on the SHiFT website. The rules above must still be followed for any changes.
