First time launching the game, it fails to load up:

On your first Steam launch of Mafia: The Old Country you'll want to be connected to the internet through Steam to ensure we can validate your game, provide any patches, and get you up and running!

What does this mean? Just that for the first launch - and only the first launch - you'll want to temporarily disable any network-restricting programs, and then be sure to be online on Steam. After that, you're free to play offline!

If you're having network connection issues, we have an article here that may be able to help.

If you're encountering a black screen at startup:

If you encounter a black screen upon first startup, this is likely a one-time issue that should resolve itself after roughly 12-15 seconds.

Cinematics will skip, hitch, or lag:

If you're watching the cinematic scenes and seeing it regularly hiccup, then check your settings to see if Frame Generation is turned on. By default it's off, but if it was activated there is a current issue that can cause these problems, and turning it back off will fix it up for now. It's just that simple.

You will also want to check if your system meets the minimum requirements for the game, which you can do here.

Other graphics issues:

  • For all performance issues or graphics glitches, always remember to try updating your drivers for your chosen graphics card:
  • Try adjusting your Render Resolution:
    • You can try reducing your Render Resolution in the Graphics section of the Settings menu to ease the load on your graphics card. Lowering it to 75-80%, for example, should make a noticeable difference to framerate without affecting the fidelity of the visuals in a significant way, especially when playing on a 4K monitor.
  • Try tweaking your Upscaling options:
    • In the Graphics section of the Settings menu, try enabling DLSS, FSR, or XeSS depending on your graphics card manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel respectively). You may get better performance than the default Unreal TSR setting.
    • In the Graphics section of the Settings menu, you can adjust the Upscaling Mode, which has these options: Performance - High, Performance, Balanced, Quality, Quality - High, Native. Setting your Upscaling Mode to a lower value may help you maintain a higher framerate.

Save File locations:

Sometimes we ask you for a save file to help troubleshoot something. If you're looking for the default location for your Steam save files, here's where you want to go:

  • Local Disk > Users > [windows username] > AppData > Local > Hangar 13 Games > Mafia The Old Country > SaveGames

Frame rate is capped:

30 FPS is the default, but to uncap it head to:

  • Main Menu > Options > Settings > Graphics

Crashing with a 13th or 14th Gen Processor from Intel:

Intel has recently shared information to customers that its 13th/14th Generation CPUs may experience instability under load due to technical errors. This instability might show up on your PC as slowdowns, crashes, overheating, or large spikes of CPU usage while gaming or installing a game.

You can read more on the official post regarding Intel's 13th and 14th Gen Processors here.

Other issues:

One of the first troubleshooting steps is to restart the Chapter. If that doesn't take care of it, these aren't your issue, or you're still having problems after trying these steps, we have some other articles that may help you out:
